According to Act No. 488/2013 Coll. on Slovak motorway vignettes and on amendments and supplements to certain laws, as amended, the obligation to pay for a Slovak vignette when using restricted sections of motorways and expressways marked with road signs applies to the following vehicles:
Two-axle motor vehicles or vehicle combinations with a total weight of less than 3.5 tons,
Two-axle motor vehicles of category M1, regardless of the maximum technically permissible weight of the vehicle,
Two-axle vehicle combinations consisting of a vehicle of categories M1 or N1, regardless of the maximum technically permissible weight of the vehicle combination.
Such vehicles are referred to as "vehicles with the obligation to pay a motorway vignette."
The obligation to purchase a Slovak electronic road vignette applies to a two-axle motor vehicle or vehicle combination with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons, and to a two-axle motor vehicle of category M1, regardless of its maximum technically permissible total weight.
This obligation also applies to trailers of categories O1 and O2 if the sum of the maximum technically permissible total weight of the vehicle of categories M1 or N1 and the maximum technically permissible total weight of the trailer exceeds 3.5 tons.

According to § 4 of Act No. 488/2013 Coll. on motorway vignettes, as amended, in connection with the payment of the Slovak motorway vignette, the driver and the owner of a vehicle/vehicle combination have the following obligations:
The driver of a vehicle or vehicle combination must pay for the motorway vignette before using the toll restricted sections of motorways and expressways.
The driver of a vehicle or vehicle combination must ensure that the obligation to pay for the motorway vignette is fulfilled when using the toll restricted sections of motorways and expressways with the vehicle or vehicle combination.
